Professor M. Kiya graduated from Graduate School of Engineering, Hokkaido University, Japan, in 1967, with Degree of Doctor of Engineering. He took the position of Associate Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Hokkaido University in 1967 and was promoted to Professor in 1983, being in the position until March 2001. During the period he engaged in teaching of Fluid Mechanics and Turbomachinery and researches in turbulent shear flows such as wakes, mixing layers, separated flows, bluff-body flows, and control of their vortex structure for engineering applications. In 2001 he took office as President, Kushiro National College of Technology, Japan. In the same year he was also granted the title of Professor Emeritus, Hokkaido University.
He served as Editor of Journal of Fluid Engineering (now Journal of Fluid Science and Technology) published by the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers (JSME), and an Associate Editor of Fluid Dynamics Research. He also served as an Executive Board Director of professional societies including the JSME, President of Japan Society of Fluid Mechanics, and Chairman of Asian Fluid Mechanics Committee.
He was awarded the Medal for Outstanding Paper and Fluid Mechanics Award from the JSME. He was elected Fellow of the JSME as well as the Japan Society of Fluid Mechanics, and Member of Japan Academy of Engineering.
